The National Communications Authority (NCA) and network operators require both new and existing phone subscribers to consensually provide their identification details for registration effective October 1, 2021. The NCA has assured subscribers that all information will be kept confidential in a secure data base. The information collected shall not be disclosed to any person unless as required by any written law.
Why must we register our numbers?
The purpose of the sim card registration is to:
- Help law enforcement agencies to identify the mobile phone SIM card owners;
- Track criminals who use phones for illegal activities;
- Curb other negative incidents such as; loss of phone through theft, nuisance/hate text messages, fraud, threats and inciting violence, and;
- Help service providers (network operators) know their customers better
Important facts about the registration
- All prepaid and postpaid phone numbers and data SIM cards must be registered.
- If you own multiple cards, you can register all of them.
- Registration will take place at your service provider outlets countrywide
- SIM card registration is absolutely free of charge.
- If you do not register by the set deadline, your SIM card shall be deactivated and you will not be able to make or receive calls
- In case you cannot do the registration, someone else can register the SIM card in his/her name but the person will be responsible for your number.
- If you own mobile fixed line, modem, data sim cards, you have to register all of them.
How to register
- Open your phone dialer and dial *404#
- Enter your NIA/Ghana card pin without the hyphens(-)
- Enter your surname
- Enter your first name(s)
- Enter your date of birth in the format DDMMYYY
- Select your sex
- Confirm details and submit
- Visit your network operator or customer care with an original copy of either Passport, Driver’s license or Voter ID to complete the registration process.
